TomTom for iPhone gets closer

TomTom has demonstrated the world’s first dedicated in-car navigation solution for the iPhone. They also announced new car kit design specifically for Apple’s infamous gadget. The TomTom solution combines two new TomTom products to provide users with state of the art in-car navigation on their iPhone:

1 – The TomTom navigation application for iPhone
This is basically an Apple version of TomTom’s award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software, which includes IQ Routes and latest maps from Tele Atlas
2 – The TomTom car kit for iPhone
This is a specially developed car kit for secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.

The TomTom navigation application for iPhone will be available via the Apple iTunes App Store, following the release of Apple’s OS 3.0 operating system. Details of pricing and availability will be available from TomTom’s dedicated iPhone site – http://iphone.tomtom.com/

TomTom Launch Designer White Pearl GPS

TomTom have just announced a brand new design of the fantastic ONE IQ Routes edition. The White Pearl edition and its EasyPort folding mount have a matching pearlescent finish and are decorated with a subtle swirl pattern making a happy departure from the typical look and feel of a TomTom portable navigation device.

Based on the TomTom ONE IQ Routes™ edition, the White Pearl ensures that driving is safe and stress-free but also includes some brand new features : special Points of Interest such as, ‘Places to be seen’ and ‘Shop ‘til you drop’. Covering everything from restaurants, bars, cafes, coffee shops, cinemas and theatres to fashion and home furnishing stores – the White Pearl gives drivers the ability to explore new places. As well as Points of Interest, the White Pearl comes with TomTom’s extremely useful Help Me! safety features, including emergency phone numbers and a ‘Where Am I?’ function – essential if the car breaks down on a journey, for example. And, as with all TomTom devices, the driver can simply plug in and go.

The White Pearl and its mount come in a “luxurious silk drawstring bag”, and will be available in June 2009 from Visit Amazon.co.uk for £179.99.

New Clio has a new TomTom

Renault is set to debut the new Clio 2009 and Clio Sport 2009 at the Geneva Motor Show next month, and showcase the Carminat TomTom system. Pitched as the first fully integrated, easy-to-update, affordable navigation solution, Renault’s latest GPS navigation system is the fruit of a close partnership with TomTom.

Like its ‘Plug&Go’ counterparts, the Carminat is ready to start working from the moment you start the car. Designed to be intuitive and easy to use, the solution aims to give Clio drivers a safe and stress-free driving experience.

Features include a massive 5.8″ screen for the display of detailed birds-eye view maps; reliable, easy-to-update navigation; traffic news, safety camera locations and speed limit information.

TomTom announce new in-dash Sat Nav

TomTom today announced yesterday that their second generation, semi-embedded TomTom device is now available. The system is designed especially for use with the in-dash Fujitsu Ten Eclipse AVN4430. With this product, a customer can enjoy all the benefits of portable navigation, integrated fully into the dashboard of their vehicle.

TomTom’s partnership with Fujitsu Ten is “a direct result of a continued focus on innovative navigation solutions” they said in their press release. Users are able to seamlessly integrate the TomTom device into their vehicle using the Eclipse AVN4430 audio, video and connectivity system. However, the TomTom device can easily be taken out of the dashboard and used as a stand-alone navigation device in a different car.

This second generation product, which was recently recognised as an Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Award Honoree, is the ideal combination of a portable navigation device (PND) coupled with in-car integration through the double-DIN radio.

It remains the only product in its class to offer smart navigation as well as ease of use when driving. Users always benefit from the latest maps via TomTom’s unique map technologies, including Map Share™. In addition, the TomTom can be used for Bluetooth handsfree calling (with compatible phones) and the 4.3″ touch screen can be used to operate the car’s entertainment system including CD/DVD player, iPod audio, iPod video and USB. This means drivers can enjoy their favourite music over their car speakers.

TomTom launch navigation for Lorry drivers

TomTom WORK has launched a truck navigation system that includes specialist route information for lorry drivers, including height and weight restrictions. Drivers can enter vehicle measurements, axle weight and total weight to allow the system to come up with a safe route. Using this information, the system also allows lorry drivers to avoid narrow residential roads where possible.

Typical HGV speeds are taken into account so drivers can also get a more accurate estimated time of arrival. Thomas Becher, commercial director of TomTom, says:

“We are committed to the development of truck navigation and we look forward to bringing additional TomTom technology and mapping to drivers in the near future.”

The HGV navigation software comes on an SD card that works in the TomTom GO x30 series, and comes with maps of Central and Western Europe, is available in the UK, Germany, Austria, and the Switzerland and is priced at £119.

TomTom GO 540 LIVE receives 5 star review

The Telegraph describe the TomTom GO 540 LIVE as ‘best for business’ and that the ‘Up to date traffic information makes [the device] a winner’. A five star review from the broadsheet proves again how popular the new range is becoming. They said:

TomTom personal navigation devices succeed because they are accurate and easy to use, with lots of information available without complicated menus to explore. This time around there are even more user-changeable items, and the Dutch firm may have reached the limit of sophistication – any more and it could be too complicated. For now, the balance of services and simplicity is still bearable.
