Last year, the thirty most generous philanthropists in the Netherlands gave €132m to good causes, according to a list put together by a Dutch magazine and reported on dutchnews.nl. The most generous giver is TomTom founder, Pieter Geelen, who gave away €30m. These figures are mainly based on estimates, says the magazine’s editor Onno Aerden, who is irritated by the ‘misplaced calvanism’ which stops people talking about their philanthropy. If you have money and you give some to good causes, you should be proud, he says, adding that it also sets a good example to others.
